History: The camphor tree can grow up to 100 feet in height and the active component is found in every part of the tree. Native to Taiwan, China and Japan, a tree must be at least 50 years old to produce the oil. A long-standing traditional preventative of infectious disease. It was a well known remedy against the plague in Persia (now Iran) and was also used in embalming, while the Chinese used it to build ships and temples, because of the durable and aromatic properties of the wood. In addition it was used for nervous and respiratory diseases in general. However, in its crude form it is very poisonous in large doses.

Therapeutic Properties: The therapeutic properties of white camphor oil are analgesic, anesthetic, antidepressant, anti-inflammatory, antiseptic, antiviral, cardiac, carminative, decongestant, diuretic, hypertensive, insecticide, laxative, stimulant, sudorific and vulnerary.

Suggested Uses:
• Massage/bath oil blends
• Cold/flu remedies

Camphor oil has a duel action of hot and cold, which has a balancing effect on the yin and yang energies. When first applied camphor oil numbs and cools the peripheral nerve endings, then warms the painful area as it stimulates circulation to cold, stiff muscles and limbs. The analgesic effect of camphor makes it a favorite oil for use in pain relieving massage blends for sore muscles, low back pain and arthritic pain.

Camphor acts as an expectorant and a febrifuge, meaning that it cools fevers and helps clear lung congestion. Camphor is a very useful ingredient in inhalations for coughs, cold and difficulties in breathing. These actions, along with camphor’s anti-inflammatory, antiviral, and antibacterial properties make it a very useful and popular remedy for colds, flu and bronchitis.
